Journey
Design Brief
As part of a summer camp committee, you’ve been tasked with creating the registration experience for the summer camp to be held for 3 weeks in April/May 2022 for kids aged 9-13 years. Design an experience for parents to learn about and enroll for the camp. Provide your overall thinking and process, detailed wireframes of the end to end flow and a few high-fidelity screens.
I will take you through the design process that I followed for this project and the design decisions I took at every stage of the process. Lets begin..
Step-1
Research
To structure the initial thoughts and explore the topic of the Design exercise I started with a brainstorming exercise to assemble all the thoughts in one place. Before beginning to find the solution for the problem I started by first identifying the issue at hand and breaking it down to its root cause. I started by writing down the details I had at hand.

Details
Design for Summer camp

Duration
3 weeks ( April / May 2022 )

Age
9 - 13 years

Step-2
Breaking down the Brief
Design a registration experience for parents to learn and enroll for the camp. Looking at the current scenario of Covid, parents are worried about even considering sending their kids to summer camps. Though the situation is improving there is still some scepticism among the parents regarding the safety of their kids.
Pandemic Influence
How can we?
Therefore how can we promote and make the parents believe that its necessary for their kids overall development and show them positives of it and addressing their concerns.
How can we ensure safety for the kids and make the parents confident.
Gender Influence
Concern about children
Gender of a child plays a key role in the amount of liberties they are given, and the experiences they are allowed for.

Girl Child
- Girls start their menstruation from as early as 9 years to 12 years.
- Concern for their hygiene would play an important role for their inclusion.

Boy Child
- Providing them a productive way to channel their energies.
- Parents know their kids better and letting them choose the best for their children according to their flaws and area of interest.

Differently Abled Kids
- Creating a space of a more inclusive than an exclusive nature.
- Teaching empathy is very important in kids which seems to have been lost along the way.
- Inclusiveness and creation of a safe environment is the intention.
Letting the parents feel they are in control is important. Not making them feel that they aren’t aware of what their kids are doing is also very important.
Step-3
Identifying the problem
Before moving ahead and starting to solve the problem we need to simplify our goals and address the underlying issue.
As I discovered in the research phase parents have major concerns about the safety and security of their child. This research was conducted keeping in mind a trip of 3 weeks for kids travelling away from parents in a different location for Summer camp. Some of the research insights that I got from an interview is stated below:
Interview findings
Interview was conducted with two set of parents having having kids in the range of 9 - 13 years
Concerns
“Mera baccha kahi gum na hojaye.”
“Kahi chot na lag jaye.”
“Koi galat baat na hojaye.”
“Bacche abhi chotey hai to raat ke liye nahi bhej saktey.”
Pros of summer camps
“Bache thoda bahr ghum ke aajayenge.”
“Knowledge hojaygi thodi bacche ko.”
“Thoda enjoy karega.”
“Apna mind fresh karega.”
One of the major concerns I started to have after the research findings came out was that parents were not willing to send their kids away from them even for a night. A summer camp of activities during a day was fine as parents also understood the importance of the activity
I had an internal conflict of wheather to make it into a day camp rather than an outing of a week or not. After taking inputs from my colleagues I decided to move ahead with day camp for 3 weeks.
Step-4
Addressing the problem
Keeping all the insights and research findings in mind I decided to state a mission statement.

Keeping all the insights and research findings in mind I decided to state a mission statement.
Get parents comfortable with sending their children to Summer camps.
Plan of action
1. Addressing the concerns of parents about summer camps.
2. Highlighting the credibility & desirability of the course and the camp.
3. Focusing / Tracking the kids growth for parents to feel proud about and keep track of.
Addressing the credibility of the camp is one of the most underlying feature that is often underlooked, therefore I also wanted to pay attention to that aspect.
Let's start designing....
Step-5
Wireframes
For wireframes I decided on the framework of the app and then jumped to design on Adobe XD.

1. Welcome screen
I wanted to keep a pretty standard Welcome page where the user gets reassured about the offerings and the descision they have taken.
Locality and the age group is mentioned to show the results specific to the area & age

The tag for ‘Covid safe’ is to address the concerns the parents have during the current times as well as to fulfil the need of the 1st point in achieving the goal.
I have kept a search bar for the locality and city specific search for the upcoming Summer camps in the area.
I have kept a search bar for the locality and city specific search for the upcoming Summer camps in the area.
The ‘12 slots remaining’ tag is to build the desirability of the program and highlight the demand of it and use the bandwagon effect to trigger the enrolment.
2. Homepage
Different assurances have been given like ‘Medical Assistance’ , ‘Individual care for every child’ , ‘vaccinated team’ to make the parents ease their concerns about the safety and security of their children.

For the description page I highlighted the Rating of the course with also mentioning the number of voters to show the organic voting.
Total views on the course is also shown for the credibility of the course.
I have also mentioned the Course mentor details and testimonies by other parents to give that human touch and reassurance about the program.

4. Images
The image of the camp is very important to convince parents by the visuals of the place and expectations of where their child is going to learn. It may seem like a small feature but it is one of the most important reasons for enrolling of the students and convincing parents.

5. Enrollment Form
On clicking on the CTA ‘Enroll now’ an enrolment form is rolled out which is divided in sections to reduce cognitive load. The details of the child enrolling for the camp and the parents contact details is what is required at this stage.

7. Profile - Badge
In the Profile - Badge screen I have tried to introduce minor gamification by including badges and different levels of progress to create a recall value in the attempt of attaining the top most badge. This could be pushed as the USP of the product to keep the users engaged and excited.

6. Confirmation Pop up
On submitting the form, a confirmation popup is pushed to validate the nature of the action ( successful or not ) and the parent is ensured about the course they have registered for and that their request is under process.

8. Report
The report card of the overall experience of the child is to make the parent feel as a part of their Childs growth where they are kept in loop of the progress their child is making. These camps can be a really good source for kids and their parents tho know about the Childs interests. The report is based only on the level of willingness of the Childs participation in type of activities and not based on performance to make them feel down about themselves.
